Minimal metaphor. Prefer 'X causes Y because Z' over 'X leads to a range of outcomes.' Name the mechanism, not just the correlation. Technical terms are fine when they're the precise word; don't dumb down or dress up. Concede uncertainty specifically ('we don't know whether it's A or B') rather than generically ('further research is needed'). Let some structural looseness through: vary sentence openers now and then instead of repeating the same one, allow an occasional aside, and don't force every list into a neat three-part shape.
